In Film und Literatur besteht in den letzten Jahren ein reges Interesse an den Themen Arbeit, soziale Klasse und Politik. Parallel hat die sozialwissenschaftliche Forschung zu diesen Themen einen Aufschwung erlebt. Die vom künstlerisch-wissenschaftlichen Forschungsprojekt “Building Bridges” (Co-Projektleitung Barbara Wolfram & Paulus Wagner) organisierte Konferenz “Arbeit – soziale Klasse – Politik – Film” an der Filmakademie Wien möchte am 29. und 30. April 2024 einen Austausch über mediale und Fachgrenzen anregen. Hierzu sind als Sprecher:innen österreichische wie internationale Film- und Literaturschaffende sowie Sozialwissenschafter:innen eingeladen. Filmische wie literarische Arbeiten, die sich in unterschiedlichen Schwerpunktsetzungen mit den Themen soziale Klasse, Arbeit und Politik auseinandersetzen, weisen auf sozialwissenschaftliche Forschungen und umgekehrt, nehmen Bezug aufeinander, manchmal direkt und wissentlich, manchmal indirekt und zufällig. Filmgespräche, Lesungen, wissenschaftliche Vorträge sowie Paneldiskussionen und öffentliche Q&As sollen möglichst vielfältigen Zugang ermöglichen und einen breiten Raum für Diskussion und Austausch schaffen.
Unter den Sprechenden finden sich führende Stimmen im jeweiligen Diskurs wie Ken Loach & Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake; Sorry we missed you; The Old Oak), Michèle Lamont (Harvard University, The Dignity of Working Men, Seeing Others), Didier Eribon (Rückkehr nach Reims, Eine Arbeiterin) und Jean-Gabriel Périot (Verfilmung Retour à Reims (Fragments)) sowie Stéphane Brizé (Streik, Der Wert des Menschen). Aus dem deutschsprachigen Raum besprechen Annika Pinske (Alle reden übers Wetter), Ulli Gladik (Inland) und Elke Groen (Der schönste Platz auf Erden) ihre filmische Arbeit. Von sozialwissenschaftlicher Seite präsentieren außerdem Lisa McKenzie (University of Bedfordshire, Getting By; “It`s not ideal”), Benoit Coquard (INSAE, Ceux qui restent – Jene, die bleiben) und Andre Schmidt (Universität Leipzig, Arbeitswelt und Demokratie in Ostdeutschland) ihre Forschung. Caroline Suh (Netflix Serie: Working: What We Do All Day mit Barack Obama) steuert eine weitere wichtige Perspektive bei.

In recent years there has been a lively interest in film and literature in the themes of labour, social class and politics. At the same time, social science research on these topics has experienced an upswing. The conference „Work – Social Class – Politics – Film“ organised by the artistic-research project „Building Bridges“ (co-project lead Barbara Wolfram & Paulus Wagner) at the Film Academy Vienna on 29 and 30 April 2024 aims to stimulate an exchange across media and subject boundaries. Austrian and international film and literature experts as well as social scientists have been invited as speakers. Cinematic and literary works, which deal with the topics of social class, labour and politics in different focal points, refer to social science research and vice versa, sometimes directly and knowingly, sometimes indirectly and coincidentally. Film talks, readings, academic lectures as well as panel discussions and public Q&As are intended to provide the most diverse access possible and create a broad space for discussion and exchange.
Among the speakers are leading voices in the respective discourse such as Ken Loach & Paul Laverty (I, Daniel Blake; Sorry we missed you; The Old Oak), Michèle Lamont (Harvard University, The Dignity of Working Men, Seeing Others), Didier Eribon (Return to Reims, A Worker) and Jean-Gabriel Périot (film version Retour à Reims (Fragments)) as well as Stéphane Brizé (Strike, The Measure of a Man). From the German-speaking world, Annika Pinske (Alle reden übers Wetter), Ulli Gladik (Inland) and Elke Groen (Der schönste Platz auf Erden) will discuss their cinematic work.From the social science side, Lisa McKenzie (University of Bedfordshire, Getting By; „It`s not ideal„), Benoit Coquard (INSAE,Those, who stay) and Andre Schmidt (University of Leipzig, The world of labour and democracy in East Germany) will also present their research.Caroline Suh (Netflix series: Working: What We Do All Day with Barack Obama) will contribute another important perspective from the US.

Conférence „Travail – Classe sociale – Politique – Film“ à l’Académie du film de Vienne, 29 et 30 avril 2024
Ces dernières années, les thèmes du travail, de la classe sociale et de la politique ont suscité un vif intérêt dans le cinéma et la littérature. Parallèlement, la recherche en sciences sociales sur ces sujets a connu un regain d’intérêt. La conférence „Travail – Classe sociale – Politique – Film“ organisée par le projet de recherche artistique „Building Bridges“ (co-direction du projet Barbara Wolfram & Paulus Wagner) à l’Académie du film de Vienne les 29 et 30 avril 2024 vise à stimuler un échange au-delà des frontières entre les médias et les sujets. Des experts autrichiens et internationaux du cinéma et de la littérature, ainsi que des chercheurs en sciences sociales, ont été invités à prendre la parole. Les œuvres cinématographiques et littéraires, qui traitent des thèmes de la classe sociale, du travail et de la politique sous différents angles, font référence à la recherche en sciences sociales et vice versa, parfois directement et en connaissance de cause, parfois indirectement et par coïncidence. Les projections de films, les lectures, les conférences académiques ainsi que les tables rondes et les questions-réponses publiques ont pour d’offrir un accès aussi diversifié que possible et de créer un vaste espace de discussion et d’échange.

Du côté germanophone, Annika Pinske (Alle reden übers Wetter), Ulli Gladik (Inland) et Elke Groen (Der schönste Platz auf Erden) parleront de leur travail cinématographique. Du côté des sciences sociales, Lisa McKenzie (Université de Bedfordshire, Se débrouiller ; „Ce n’est pas l’idéal“), Benoit Coquard (INSAE, Ceux qui restent) et Andre Schmidt (Université de Leipzig, Le monde du travail et la démocratie en Allemagne de l’Est) présenteront également leurs recherches. Caroline Suh (série Netflix : Working : What We Do All Day avec Barack Obama) apportera une autre perspective importante des États-Unis.
